the ayslum was first open in 1848 to provide care for people with mental illnesses. it once house over 1,500 patients which also included children with learning difficulties along with people who sufford from dementia, addictions, and epilepsy. many of the patients were both verbally and physically abused by members of staff. the place finally closed for good in 1995 and in 2013 the councils planning committee voted in favour of a compulsory purchase order then in september plans to turn it into 300 homes were approved. to this day no work has been carried out though there are new plans to demolish the entire site and build houses there but only time will tell what fate awaits it.
