Various of rally being monitored by riot police STORYLINE: Turkish police used water cannons and tear gas on Monday against thousands of protesters rallying against curfews in the southeast of the country. Demonstrators in Diyarbakir - the heart of Turkey's mainly Kurdish-populated region - chanted "Long live leader Apo", referring to the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) Abdullah Ocalan. Periodic clashes have erupted between government forces and Kurdish militants since peace talks collapsed in July. Turkish security forces launched a large-scale operation last week which they said aimed to rout militants linked to the PKK. They claim 200 militants were killed.
