For thousands of years, gold has been used as money. In the late 1800s, two weeks of wages could buy about one ounce of gold. But today, with gold sitting near record highs, it actually takes far less gold to match a modern wage. So the question becomes: how much gold would someone need to find to survive in modern Australia? In this video I head deep into a remote Tasmanian river that was successfully worked during the 1800s gold rush. Using basic hand tools and a wetsuit, I search the exposed bedrock and natural gold traps left behind by the old miners to see what the river still holds today. Join me as I explore this historic goldfield, test new ground, and see whether gold prospecting could still pay the bills in the modern world.
