Those Who Never Got Home

During a period of the cold war the Swedish Airforce was the 4th largest in the world, with over 1200 modern planes. To discourage from attack against Sweden the philosophy of the airforce was to fly the same way and as tough as during war, to be prepared for it. The lowest altitude allowed was 10m over sea and 20m over land, but since there was primitive measuring equipment especially over land and no recording, you practically flew as low as you dared. To stay low and fly fast was your protection because with the existing equipment you were visible very late by the enemys radar. This way of flying had a very high price, since 547 aviators were killed between 1946 and 1989. It affected several thousand family members. My friend Alf Ingesson Thoor wrote a book about it, together with Göran Jacobsson. It’s certainly worth attention. Recorded near F6 Karlsborg.
