An unofficial profile of Winterton Coastwatch and tribute to the late Alan McMurchie who passed away in 2016. The disconnect of UK Coastguard stations around the country from where emergency incidents take place was inevitable in light of new technologies and austerity measures. However, human observation and local knowledge is still regarded by some to be vital. To bridge these apparent gaps in coastal safety two charities emerged, the Sea safety Group and National Coastwatch Institution. This is a profile of the lesser funded 'Vital Eyes' initiative, spearheaded by the Sea Safety Group. Winterton Coastwatch is one of seven watch stations on the Norfolk and Suffolk coastr operated by the charity. IN PART TWO, filmed during December 2012 and January 2013, Roger Rolf and fellow watch keepers Francis Southgate and Mo Stride reveal the appeal for them of volunteering their free time as watch keepers. We see how radar and the Automatic Identification System (AIS) help keep vessels stay safe and why ship logging can still be useful in this age of GPS and some advice for summer visitors! My first attempt at documentary film making and early experimentation with DSLR video. A worthy and interesting subject and I hope I've at least managed to lend some clarity if not a voice to some coastal issues and what is an important community service. For further information on the Coastwatch initiative visit www.seasafetygroup.org or the NCI website at http://www.nci.org.uk/ Coastguard SOS http://coastguardsos.com/news/ highlights the importance of retaining a trained and experienced coastguard presence around our coast and the concerns over the erosion of the original Coastguard service set up 40 years ago.
