How To: Oil Catch Can Install An oil catch can is something often installed on an engine that sees high boost pressures or even lots of high Rpm use. Under either of those circumstances there could be more "blowby" in the crankcase, so an oil catch can is installed in-line with the pcv valve to help try and pull out the excessive oil vapors so that the engine isn't smoking and burning oil. Well, for the 2010 GTI we're installing one for a different reason. If you remember a few months back we did an intake port/valve De-carbon, DI (Direct injection) engines tend to end up with bad or excessive carbon build up in the intake ports and on the intake valves. The reason for this is that the fuel is now sprayed directly into the cylinder rather than down the port upstream of the intake valve. That's a problem because what kept the ports/valves clean was the detergent, and that is in the fuel. So for our GTI we're installing an oil catch can in an attempt to reduce the amount of oil vapor, crankcase fumes and moisture that gets drawn into the intake from the PCV system. It will mean that periodically we'll need to empty the catch can, but if that reduces the carbon build up then it will be worth it! Doing a De-carbon SUCKS!
