After the wreath laying on the river the service took place. During World War I the Germans were using the port of Zeebrugge to allow their submarines to access the North Sea. It was decided to block the port to stop this access. On St Georges Day 23rd April 1918 the raid took place using two commandeered Wallasey ferry boats Iris and Daffodil, along with HMS Vindictive as the main assault ship, Three other war ships HMS's Iphigenia, Intrepid and Thetis were to block the Canal. Vindictive went alongside the mole with Iris and Daffodil, Whilst the three other vessels scuttled themselves in the entrance to the Canal. The raid was Mainly successful and eight Victoria crosses were awarded. Six being awarded to Royal Naval Personnel and two to the Royal Marines. In August 1918 by order of King George V the two wallasey ferry boats had the prefix Royal added to their name.
