What is the Marine Expeditionary Unit: Episode 2 - The Ground Combat Element The Ground Combat Element (GCE) of a Marine Expeditionary Unit is a reinforced infantry battalion called a Battalion Landing Team (BLT). The BLT is augmented with reconnaissance assets, engineers, light armored vehicle detachments, an artillery battery, among other capabilities. It is organized and equipped for expeditionary amphibious operations from ship to shore to carry out raids, amphibious assaults, take part in security operations, or seize and hold objectives ashore as needed. The GCE operates closely with the MEU’s aviation and logistics elements for air support, mobility, and sustainment.
