The Ruins Of Vikramashila is testimony before the World for being the epitome of learning and education for centuries. The Ruins of Ancient Vikramashila Monastery is located in a beautiful village called 'Antichak' in Bhagalpur district of Bihar on the bank of River Ganga. Vikramashila Monastery was built by famous Pala King Dharmpala in 9th century.He was son of Gopala who established Nalanda Mahavihar. It was one of five famous Monasteries developed by Pala Kings such as Nalanda&Udantpuri(in Nalanda district),Somapuri&Jagadala Manastries(now in Bangladesh). It was called as Vikramshila bcz a Yaksha(Spirits regarded as patrons of Wealth and Fertility) called 'Vikrama' was suppressed here.So,It was called as 'Vikramshila'. Most of historical writtings about this Monasteries are recorded from Tibetan Buddhist Scholar - Taranath It prospered for about four centuries before it was destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji along with the other major centres of Buddhism in India in early 13th century. Vikramashila Monastary was exclusively known for origin of Vajrayan School of Buddhism. It literally means “Vehicle of Thunderbolt”.The Vajrayana or “Diamond Vehicle” is also called Mantrayana, Tantrayana which was established in Tibet in the 11th century. The present Guru Dalai Lama has close connection with this School of Thought.
