The temple was constructed primarily in the late 10th and early 11th centuries, showcasing the Khleang and Baphuon architectural styles. It was dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva, though Vishnu was also worshipped there. The temple features a flat concentric layout with a central sanctuary surrounded by enclosures and ponds. These ponds, adorned with naga balustrades, symbolize the "Goddess of the Water" and are a unique aspect of the temple's design Over time, the temple was abandoned, likely around the 13th century, and was rediscovered in the early 20th century. Prasat Muang Tam is a significant historical site, reflecting the cultural and religious influences of the Khmer Empire in Thailand.
