Roles Plugin: The most common way to manage roles in Jenkins is by using the "Role-Based Authorization Strategy" plugin. This plugin allows Jenkins administrators to define roles and assign specific permissions to those roles. Role Types: Global Roles: These are applicable across the entire Jenkins instance. For example, a user with the "Admin" role may have full access to all aspects of Jenkins. Project Roles: These are specific to individual Jenkins projects or jobs. For example, users with the "Developer" role might be able to modify code or configure build parameters but not change the Jenkins configuration. Common User Roles in Jenkins 1. Admin: Permissions: Admin users have the highest level of access and can configure Jenkins, install plugins, create/modify/delete jobs, manage security, and manage system settings. Use Case: Typically for Jenkins administrators or system maintainers who are responsible for overall system configuration and user management. 2. Developer: Permissions: Developers typically have permissions to create, configure, and build jobs, but they may not be able to change Jenkins global settings or install plugins. Use Case: This role is intended for users who are directly involved in building and deploying software but do not need to manage Jenkins itself. 3. Job/Project Owner: Permissions: Users in this role can manage a specific Jenkins project or job, including configuring build parameters, job settings, and triggers. Use Case: Typically assigned to team leads or responsible users who own particular projects within Jenkins. 4. Read-Only User: Permissions: Read-only users can only view the build status and results of jobs. They cannot modify configurations or trigger builds. Use Case: This role is suitable for stakeholders or managers who need to monitor builds but have no need to alter Jenkins configurations. 5. Build Executor: Permissions: This role typically has access to execute builds and monitor their status, but they may not have permissions to change configurations. Use Case: This role is useful for users who are responsible for executing or overseeing the execution of builds but not for configuring Jenkins jobs. 6. Anonymous: Permissions: Anonymous users are users who have no authentication (i.e., they are not logged in). The permissions for anonymous users are typically very limited, often restricted to only viewing public jobs or system information. Use Case: For systems where some information needs to be visible without authentication, such as publicly available build results.
