It feels silly to justify borrowing money for college to earn a degree for a shrinking/compromised labor market. Especially while kids are making millions of dollars streaming online. Especially while young adults are making millions of dollars producing their own version of porn online. Student loan debt forgiveness programs are shrinking and you’re looking up side hustles to support any income you may have. Someone’s selling you a course on how to start an online business, trade assets, or gamble to help you thrive economically in a chaotic world. And the trap I see many fall into is trying to be exceptional, rather than maxing out on average. And the underlying issue is that average isn’t considered enough. And we’ll come back to that. When people mention these multimillionaire young people they typically bring it up in conversation like, “all these people are making it big from being online.” As if showing your feet online to cater to the kinks of others is the single only thing preventing you from experiencing financial freedom. As if all you need is a camera, wifi, and a can do spirit. And deep down, you know it’s not that simple. This reminds me of my experience of sports in childhood. I grew up in the rural south of America with so many talented athletic kids. A few got scholarships to universities and many never made it pro. This isn’t a rare experience. Kids all across the nation weren’t just enjoying sports as a way to pass the time - they were funneled into programs to sharpen their talent, to be scouted, to go to a D-1 school, and fight tooth and nail for a chance to go pro. This wasn’t just kids having fun, this was borderline trafficking talented young bodies to be propelled into an entertainment industrial complex and maybe, just maybe given a chance to advance their economic situation. I say these kids as if I wasn’t right there with them, but those sports weren’t my calling, wasn’t my ministry, I didn’t have a chance, but I could rap though.
