The Jesus Bolt - Punk Photo (Official Music Video)

Bristol-based duo The Jesus Bolt have released a new video for "Punk Photo"; off their current record Machine Gun Nest. The album was released in September 2023 through Rock Svirke Records. The Jesus Bolt are Gerard Starkie and Hazel Winter. Based in Bristol, UK, the couple have been writing and playing what Louder Than War describes as ‘alternative blues, skiffle folk, bohemian art pop’ since 2018. Gerard said this about the new song: “The title of the song came to me looking at an old family photo. My brother and sister on pushbikes, me the youngest, on a tricycle. I knew that at the time the photo was being taken that tricycle would have been a huge great motorbike. Then I remembered the boxes full of action figures with missing hands, matchbox cars, part melted toy soldiers, dinosaurs, farm animals, marbles, costume jewellery and how I could effortlessly improvise any scenario that came to mind with a combination of these contents. My mum asks ‘ Why is there an old curtain draped over my best chair?’ I reply ‘ It’s a mountain ‘. He continues about the new video: “We decided to shoot the video at the local community centre. We’ve gigged there a few times and the old hall has a 1970’s amateur dramatics feel to it which was perfect for the song. When our camera man pulled out an hour before we were due to start shooting we decided to put our Punk Photo money where our mouths were and shoot the thing ourselves on two iPhones and a ’selfie’ tripod. Hazel took on the roles of ‘angels and devils of my imagination’. As we didn’t have access to any 'exuberant youngsters firing rounds at the sky’ we went instead for a gang of pirates throwing rocks at bottles, before handing one of them a crowbar and telling her to go and break into Hazel’s car. We finished off the shoot with the darkroom footage which we mocked up at home”. The Jesus Bolt will embark on Balkan tour this spring.
