Importing Camels for the U.S. Army

In America, sightings of wild camels were somewhat common among Western settlers during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Before this period, the United States was beginning its westward expansion and had just won the Mexican American War. With their newly won territories, they sought an efficient way to communicate with western settlers, transport supplies, and battle Native Americans beyond Texas. Their only familiarity with the new, desert terrain was what was stated in the Bible. To address this need, the army funded the idea to use camels that had been transported from the Middle East and Africa.
