Book Three of Mere Christianity moves on to the matter of Christian behaviour. In that sense, it returns to subject matters that relate to the substance of Book One, namely the matters of right and wrong which Christianity shares in common with all major religions, and which are a part of the 'law of human nature'. And yet the intervening Book on what Christians believe is central to understanding how different what Christians believe is from the moral teaching of other religions precisely because of what he says about Jesus Christ. He is both fully God and fully man, and in the atonement, in great humility that perfect man willingly submitted himself to the death we deserved and he did not. So in this chapter Christian behaviour we will find a great deal of discrepancy between Christian behaviour and that of other religions (and none). Here, Lewis is at his most intuitive and persuasive as an apologist, dealing with the practical objections of his culture and in rebutting misconceptions about Christian morality. He deals with them on their own terms, and they have apologetic force even unto themselves, but they are best understood in the light of what he has written in the two foregoing Books of Mere Christianity. Aside from addressing the most common objections and misconceptions about Christian behaviour, Lewis alludes to the Medieval doctrine of the seven virtues (4 cardinal or temporal) and 3 theological as guideposts for understanding the roots of Christian moral conduct. ❤️ If you find my channel helpful, become a channel member: / drscottmasson
