(20 Aug 1999) Turkish/Nat Rescue operations continue in Istanbul following Tuesday's killer earthquake amid fears that further tremors may hit the city. Large numbers of people whose houses weren't destroyed in the original quake have now moved into tents in the city's parks, fearful of aftershocks. As the death toll continues to rise, those who were spared by the disaster struggle to come to terms with what has happened. Recorded deaths have surpassed the nine and a half thousand mark, but this bleak statistic masks the individual tragedies. As rescuers in the suburb of Avcilar work to free bodies and possibly survivors from the ruins, families scour the area, desperate for news or sightings of their loved ones. On Friday, many had to be held back by emergency workers as they tried to get closer to the rubble of their former homes. This man and woman were told to keep patient while search and rescue teams recovered more bodies. For this woman, the waiting became too much. Turkish and foreign rescue teams searching for survivors in the mountains of collapsed houses yet to be cleared admit that the lack of water and sweltering heat have made chances of survival slim for the estimated 35-thousand people still thought to be under the debris. SOUNDBITE: (Turkish) "We are here because we are scared, we can't stay at home. We were thinking of returning but it seems that we will be staying here longer."
