It is important that you know and understand exactly what a Bare Root plant is. We currently offer quite a wide selection of plants that are barefoot. Why Bareroot? Bareroot plants are lightweight because the soil has been shaken or washed from the plants in the field. The plants are dormant so there are no leaves on them. Lightweight plants are easy to handle, easier to plant, and an inexpensive way to get a healthy vigorous plant. We also like the fact that these bareroot plants coming from the field will not have any circling roots, but healthy roots with many small fibrous roots intact to help the plants easily re-establish once planted back out in the soil. The plants are grown in the fields outside under regular outdoor conditions. Most any plant can be grown and then dug from the field and then sold as a bare root plant—both trees, shrubs, roses, vines, fruit trees all can be done this way. So how is it done? Most plants are grown for 2 or 3 years in the field. The plants are exposed to frost and colder temperatures in the fall and they start to color up and begin to go dormant. Then we take big digging machines that straddle 3 rows at a time. It lifts the plants from the ground and carefully shakes off the soil off of the roots (much like a potato digging machine). These plants are picked up in the field right after being dug and are rushed to our giant coolers where the plants are inventoried and stacked up in large racks, so we know exactly what we have to sell. The plants are kept at about 35 degrees and the humidity is kept very high. The high humidity keeps the roots moist and the plants in excellent, viable condition. Bareroot plants remain dormant (the plants think it is winter in the cold dark cooler, so they do not start to grow but remain simply dormant while there). The bareroot plants are held in these huge cooler facilities until we sell them. Once sold, they take the dormant plants out of the coolers and wrap the roots in a moist packing material, and then in plastic to keep the moisture in. If you buy more than one bareroot, they do get bundled together, wrapped in plastic, and then put in the box to ship. When you get these plants, the first thing you need to do is to cut the twine holding the plants together. Once you’ve received your bareroot plants, you’ll need to open the box and take the plants out of the box and soak the roots in water. The roots should never be allowed to be exposed to the air or the sun, but either in water or covered with plastic until the plants are planted in the soil and watered well. If you cannot plant the plants right away, the roots can be watered well and covered with a plastic garbage bag and placed inside of a garage or unheated porch out of direct sunlight. These bareroot plants (as long as the roots are kept moist) can be held for several weeks if the outside temperatures are not too hot. So the shelf life of these plants is much better than most people think. Thanks for watching!
