Syrian Kurds demonstrate in Qamishli against Turkish intervention

(1 Nov 2018) Thousands of people protested in the northeastern Syrian city of Qamishli on Thursday against Turkish threats to intervene in the Kurdish-administered part of the country. Most of Syria's east is under the control of a US-backed Kurdish force which is affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, a banned group that has led a decades-long armed struggle against Turkey. Earlier this week Turkey threatened to attack Kurdish forces east of the Euphrates river and these threats were followed by artillery shelling. Also on Thursday, Turkey began joint military patrols with US troops around the city of Manbij, just west of the Kurdish zone.
