Take a walk with me through the historic Delaware County Jail, where the inmates lived with Warden, his wife, and children. Constructed in 1878 by David Gibbs of Toledo, the old Historic Jail and Sheriff’s Residence was in use until 1988 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This beautiful, primarily Italianate structure features some Gothic Revival and Second Empire details. The 8,500 square foot building contains sixteen cells that were used for men and two used for women. The men's cells are accessed from the first floor of the building, whilst the two cells for the women are upstairs. As part of the prison reform movement of which Rutherford B. Hayes championed, this building served as the sheriff’s home. The sheriff’s wife, known as the “Matron,” cooked meals and cared for the inmates. The men would roam the cell block during the day. Some would be charged with babysitting the Warden's children, and sometimes were even asked to take the kids into town for ice cream. The ladies would assist with laundry, cleaning, and cooking. Their are reports of shadow figures, disembodied voices, the sound of footsteps, and more! I was able to spend the night at this amazing location for my Spirit Quest event on August 15th of 2025. It was a wonderful place, charged with spiritual activity. This newest museum features several displays and period furniture, and the cell block is open for tours. If you are in town and can check it out, I suggest you do so. I hope you enjoy this little silent walk through of the building. (And if you see a woman or man duck quickly around a corner- I assure you they are alive, and well. Real people that were there to assist me that evening.)
