More about Lorde in German: https://kurz.zdf.de/Lorde/ Desire, shame, and self-discovery. Lorde reveals herself totally emotionally and physically on her album "Virgin" and in her interview with "aspekte." The song "Royals" already made Lorde a global star at the age of 16 years old. In the summer when she turned 28, she released her very personal fourth album, "Virgin." She tells “aspekte” quite openly and without embellishments about it’s themes: eating disorders, contraception, and taped breasts.. Already resilient and strong as a 12 year old teenager: Lorde had a record deal in her pocket and released her first album at 17. Her song "Royals" became a hit in 2013 and made her world famous. In 2025—at 28 —Lorde returns with "Virgin," her fourth and most brave album to date. She sings openly about her state of mind, her body, shame, and self-love. For "aspekte," presenter Salwa Houmsi meets New Zealand singer and songwriter Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor in a special place: Berlin's oldest lecture hall, the Anatomisches Theater. In this exclusive interview, Lorde speaks honestly and more candidly than ever before about pain, self-discovery, sexuality, and the pressures of fame since her youth. The album cover of "Virgin," an x-ray of her pelvis with a visible IUD, underlines the album's brutal directness and Lorde's intense exploration of intimacy and identity. "I wanted to capture my femininity, unadulterated, chaotic, and unfiltered. After all, there are enough beautiful, perfectly polished portrayals of women," she tells Salwa Houmsi. It is the reason Lorde addresses her eating disorder and how she overcame it on the album: "Those were tough years. I was only concerned with getting thinner, feeling alone, even though I knew many young women were fighting the same battles with their bodies." For Lorde, the chaos of womanhood also includes questions of gender fluidity. "Some days I'm a woman, some days I'm a man," she sings in "Hammer." In the video "Man Of the Year" her breasts are only covered with duct tape. Her appearance in a similar outfit at the Met Gala in New York sparked the rumor: Is Lorde now nonbinary? In the interview with "aspekte," Lorde reveals: "I'm still searching for myself; it's a process. I feel a lot of compassion for queer and transgender people and want to protect them. It's very scary right now." Lorde turns her own fragility into powerful pop that breaks with the conventional mainstream.
