The Royal Enfield Bullet may have its origins in Redditch, England, dating back to 1932, but it’s India that gave it — and its makers — longevity. An import just like itself was the humble Poie, a kind of bread that originated in Portugal, whose people came ‘visiting’ about 500 years ago. While foreign by genesis, both, the cast iron-engined Bullet 350 and Poie took on a new life once they settled into the Indian landscape, the popularity of each only having grown tremendously over the last few decades. This wasn’t the result of magic, however. With the right fundamentals, an ability to adapt and by, most crucially, remaining rooted, both of these ‘imports’ remain relevant and are widely romanticised by Indians. Humble Poie is not a story about motorcycles — or about the art of baking Poie in the traditional Goan/Portuguese way — and yet, somehow, most poignantly about both. In this story, a storyteller you may have heard of, Ruman Devmane, rides a borrowed Bullet 350 to the Mapusa Municipal Market in Goa, acclaimed for its Poie stalls among other things, and eventually finds his way to The Old Bakery in Ribandar, Old Goa (Velha Goa) where, well, a lot of things transpire around a traditional wood-fired oven. On the whole, this cinematic, unfiltered, old-school story tells an original tale about Goa and may, perhaps, add to your list of things to do in Goa with a charming twist.
