室生寺は、奈良時代末期（8世紀後半）に創建された真言宗の名刹です。国宝の五重塔や金堂などの歴史的建造物が自然と調和し、四季折々の美しさを楽しめます。かつて女人禁制だった高野山に対し、室生寺は女性の参拝を認めてきたことから「女人高野」と呼ばれて親しまれてきました。 主な仏像としては、金堂に中尊の迦如来立像が祀られ、寳物殿には優美なプロポーションで知られる十一面観音立像や迦如来座像が安置されています。これらはいずれも平安初期の仏教美術を代表する名品（国宝）です。 Murouji Temple located in Uda City, Nara Prefecture is a renowned temple of the Shingon Buddhist tradition, was founded in the late Nara period (late 8th century). Its historic structures—including the National Treasure five-storied pagoda and the Kondo(Main Hall)—blend beautifully with the surrounding nature, offering stunning scenery throughout the seasons. Unlike Mount Kōya, the monastic headquarters of Shingon Buddhism where women were once prohibited, Murouji welcomed female worshippers and came to be warmly known as “Nyonin Koya,” or “Koya for women.” The main hall enshrines a standing statue of Shakyamuni Buddha as its principal image. The treasure hall houses the Eleven headed Kannon—celebrated for its graceful form—along with a seated statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. All of these statues are designated National Treasures and stand as outstanding examples of Buddhist art from the 8th–9th centuries.
