Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto Oy (JKOY) Class Sm5, operated by VR Lähiliikenne, accelerating from Rekola to Korso station. The train reaches a steady speed of 120 km/h. The Sm5 is a FLIRT-series train, adapted to colder Finnish conditions. First of the Flirts, units 01 to 32, were ordered in 2006 with an additional 9 ordered in 2011, 34 more in 2014 and the final option of ordering 6 more was used in November 2015. In total, there are 81 Sm5-class trains in service with good reliability. The first units, 01 and 02, were subjected to rigorous testing before passenger service. The tests lasted over a year with the first passenger run on 18th November 2009. The last unit was delivered in July 2017, with that date coinciding with the retirement of older Sm1- and Sm2-class trains from HSL routes. The Sm1 has been completely retired, but around half of the newer but related Sm2 trains still run, mostly on weekdays as rush hour fleet. The Finnish FLIRT is rather comfortable with smooth acceleration and braking action. It is capable of speeds up to 160 km/h, however on routes it is used on the maximum is 120 km/h. There are 4 cars on each trainset with the motors being located behind the driver’s cab on both ends of the train. Sound-wise the units are much more pleasant to listen to with your ears than an inductor. The sounds made by the ABB VVVF tend to be on the harsher side with little to no harmony.
