Spreadsheets are the most widely used data tool in most organizations, used by all skill and seniority levels. Spreadsheets can be a double edged sword - they make it very easy for anyone to do a wide range of business critical work, but that very attribute and lack of security controls can make traditional spreadsheets a security risk. Conversely, the ubiquity of spreadsheets creates a big opportunity to improve self-serve data access, scale data insights, and align around your “source of truth” data. 5 biggest risks with spreadsheets: 1. How data is sourced into spreadsheets 2. Inadequate access controls 3. Workarounds for large data sets 4. Widespread, untraceable data leakage 5. Loss of data integrity Explore more in our post: https://rowzero.io/spreadsheet-securi... Traditional spreadsheets like Excel can lack modern security features. Without a proactive data governance strategy, spreadsheets can create widespread, untraceable data leakage. One of the biggest Excel security risks may be related to workarounds for big files. Excel has a row limit of 1,048,576 rows. When users need to work with a file too big for Excel or Google Sheets, they may seek out workarounds by splitting files and uploading data to unauthorized websites. There is a similar CSV security risk with exporting CSV data out of SaaS tools like Salesforce and Hubspot. While common, it presents a significant data governance failure when data is downloaded onto local computers, copied, shared, and emailed. An important solution to this problem is to sync spreadsheets directly to your data source and then restrict data export across the tech stack. Ideally your organization does not share files but rather secure links to files and datasets that require a secure company login.
