Judicial Independence vs. Judicial Corruption

On Monday, April 25, the event, "Judicial Independence vs. Judicial Corruption: Judicial Decision-making in China and its Implications" was moderated by Professor Jerome Cohen and LI Ling, the USALI Sr. Research Fellow and Assistant Professor at Northwest University of Political Science and Law. Ling's papers explored the rampant corruption in China's courts, the fact that introducing judicial independence may in fact empower corrupt judges and exacerbate the already severe problem of judicial corruption. Ling points out that many further argue that the concepts of judicial independence and the rule of law may not fit local conditions in countries such as China. This presentation intended to resolve this paradox regarding judicial independence and judicial corruption based on a comprehensive empirical study of corruption in China's courts.
