TODAY’S CHAT by Reading For Change: A Collective Journey shares our reflections on the Cluster 4 reading selection, “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind” by Yuval Noah Harari. Hosted by L. Michelle Odom, Conversationalists included in this event were Georgette Moses. Tonight, Ch. 5, “History’s Biggest Fraud,” begins our discussion of “Part Two The Agricultural Revolution.” During this revolution, which occurred over thousands of years, about 10,000 years ago between 9500-8500 BC, Homo sapiens gave up their hunter-gatherer ways in favor of what they believed were the luxuries and benefits of a farming lifestyle. It wasn’t, according to the case Harari begins to build. He says, “The Agricultural Revolution was history’s biggest fraud.” Instead of an exciting, interesting, varied life of diverse nutrients, our species received increased exposure to disease and famine, diminished immunity, increased child mortality, more suffering, and more work to survive. Here the author traces when and how agriculture spread, and its costs and benefits for people, animals and land. We are not using facilitators this session. Everyone is asked to come prepared to read a passage and lead the group in reflecting on the chosen material. We may also bring discussion question(s), and/or item(s) to share (such as a picture, video, article, etc.) Reading For Change: A Collective Journey is a weekly group currently meeting on Tuesdays at 5:00 pm ET on YouTube. Readers are welcome to join us in the discussion online or watch the live event or video recordings on YouTube. It explains that money is the most pluralistic system of mutual trust ever devised; that capitalism is the most successful religion ever invented; that the treatment of animals in modern agriculture is probably the worst crime in history; and that even though we are far more powerful than our ancient ancestors, we aren’t much happier. “By combining profound insights with a remarkably vivid language, Sapiens acquired cult status among diverse audiences, captivating teenagers as well as university professors, animal rights activists alongside government ministers. “Seventy thousand years ago, there were at least six different human species on earth. They were insignificant animals, whose ecological impact was less than that of fireflies or jellyfish. Today, there is only one human species left: Us. Homo sapiens. But we rule this planet. “Sapiens, the book, takes us on a breath-taking ride through our entire human history, from its evolutionary roots to the age of capitalism and genetic engineering, to uncover why we are the way we are. “Sapiens focuses on key processes that shaped humankind and the world around it, such as the advent of agriculture, the creation of money, the spread of religion and the rise of the nation state. Unlike other books of its kind, Sapiens takes a multi-disciplinary approach that bridges the gaps between history, biology, philosophy and economics in a way never done before. Furthermore, taking both the macro and the micro view, Sapiens conveys not only what happened and why, but also how it felt for individuals. “Sapiens invites us to not only connect past developments with present concerns, but moreover to question our basic narratives of the world. The book’s conclusions are enlightening and at times provocative. — Harper Perennial, Publisher ----------------------------- STAY IN TOUCH: Email: ReadingForChange2015@gmail.com Reading Changes Lives website: Subscribe for updates from the Reading Changes Lives website, including the Book Chat News blog and background on all the reading groups. https://readingchangeslives.wordpress...
