KOAN: Yunyan asked Daowu, “How does Guanyin use all those hands and eyes?” Daowu answered, “It’s like feeling behind you for a pillow in the middle of the night.” “I understand.” “What do you understand?” “The whole body is hands and eyes.” “That’s very well expressed, but it doesn't say it all.” “What would you say, older brother?” “All through the body are hands and eyes.” —Blue Cliff Record Case 89 (transl. by John Tarrant & Joan Sutherland) In his opening talk of Fall Sesshin, John Tarrant talks about the koan, the way raccoons interacting with a water dish are the hands and eyes of Guanyin, and how we encounter impenetrable mountain cliffs in our practice – and then, without reason, a gap appears. "It will appear for you, too. Each one of you is completely capable of waking up." Talk given in PZI's 2024 Fall Sesshin: The Manifestations of the 1000-Armed Goddess of Mercy, at Santa Sabina Center in Northern California, on opening night, October 22, 2024. Our PZI 2024 Fall Sesshin was a 7-day and 6-night residential retreat held at Santa Sabina Center in San Rafael, California, with John Tarrant and PZI Teachers Allison Atwill, Tess Beasley, Jon Joseph, Michelle Riddle, and David Weinstein. Also with Head of Practice Todd Geist, timekeeper Marion Power, and PZI musicians Amanda Boughton, Amaryllis Fletcher, Michelle Riddle, and Michael Wilding.
