In the little village of Monkton Farleigh, a stone's throw from Bradford-on-Avon is a dark and mysterious tunnel, once used to transport 1,000 tonnes of ammunition on a daily basis. The seven-foot wide depot extends under some 200 acres of north Wiltshire countryside and could house more than 350,000 tons of ammunition. The depot even had its own system of underground powerhouses which provided electricity for the 100,000 lamps that lit its corridors, while being serviced by a network of railways, including a branch of the main London to Bristol railway line. However, when the conventional arms were replaced by nuclear weaponry in around 1963, there was no use for these storage facilities and the MOD abandoned the site, leaving everything as it was. It is just one of the many underground bunkers, citadels, command centres and factories lurking deep below Wiltshire soil. The depot has been visited by many an explorer over the years - abandoned and unclaimed by the MOD - it sits dark and fading. Monkton Farleigh is privately owned by the MOD, even if they have not claimed the land since the 1960s and all that dare to tread it's corridors are doing so at their own risk. Join DPI as we try once again to uncover what's beneath mysterious Wiltshire, this time investigating the intimidating Farleigh Down Tunnel.
