A reading including commentary on my translation of the viking saga collection Heimskringla. This is the fithf part of the Ynglinga Saga, which is the first saga of Heimskringla. This part covers Odin's death, more on Njörd, Frey's death, Freyja and her daughters and King Fjölnir's death. 00:00 - Introduction 00:33 - Short comments 01:55 - Odin's death 02:50 - On Njörd 03:32 - Frey's death 05:10 - On Freyja and her daughters 06:03 - King Fjölnir's death 07:38 - Commentary on terms and translations In this video I first introduce the magical site of Tustrup Høje - an extremely old megalithic site in Jutland, Denmark from at least 3200 BC. I then on to read my translation of Snorri Sturlason where he tells of Odin's death - which was a natural one but where he let himself pierce by a spear and dedicated all warriors to himself. We also learn more on Njörd and his reign, as well as Frey's much celebrated peaceful reign and death. We get more information on Frejya and her daughters, as well as King Fjölnir's drunken death at Lejre in Denmark. Finally in the video I go through some of my own choices in translation and further commentary I think is worth pointing out. My background is as a Norwegian, but have I lived in Denmark many years as well, and have travelled extensively in Scandinavia and Europe and so I bring a lot of local knowledge of the places, geography and folkloristic history associated with the saga literature. I have a lifelong interest in nordic history, language and dialects. I think this will bring a lot of interesting commentary to the sagas that especially non-Scandinavians can find interesting and helpful in appreciating the saga literature.
