Gaël Clichy and Robert Pires are hopeful that Zinedine Zidane will succeed Didier Deschamps as head coach of the French national team after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Deschamps already announced he will retire after the tournament in North America next summer. And there's been a lot of speculation that Zinedine Zidane will take over. “We are waiting for this. Hopefully it’s Zizou,” said Pires. Clichy agreed: “It’s an obvious choice from what he has done as a player. What he has done as a coach in Real Madrid. And for what he represents not only in France, but all over the world. He’s a football icon and obviously, we hope this can happen.” The two former French internationals matched up on the pitch in the “Cannes Legends” charity match, designed to honour the club’s past and rally supporters behind its ambition to restore AS Cannes to its former status in French football. The club’s “Legends” team—alumni including Zinédine Zidane (who didn't play), Patrick Vieira, Gaël Clichy, Sébastien Frey—faced the “Étoiles,” featuring French football legends such as France’s coach Didier Deschamps, Robert Pires, Ludovic Guily. AS Cannes played 22 seasons in France’s top flight and even participated in the UEFA Cup in 1990‑91 and 1990-95 seasons. In 2025‑2026 season, they play in National 2, which is the fourth tier of French football.
