This presentation has taken place, watch it here: • Transcending Borders Oaxacan Rug Weaving: ... The Transcending Borders Film and Presentation Series is a regular program of the WNMU annual event Fiesta Latina that occurs annually in June. In 2020, the event was cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions, and WNMU decided to put the series on-line as a virtual presentation. The series aims to bring a diverse audience together to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the historical, economic, social and cultural significance of various forms of traditional Mexican and indigenous art. “Oaxaca Rug Weaving in Teotitlan del Valle” A visit to Teotitlan del Valle in the state of Oaxaca, leads to a discussion with local celebrity weaver Demetrio Bautista Lazo in the beautiful La Cupola Inn he runs along with his wife Maribel. Discussion includes the history of rug weaving and dyeing in Oaxaca, the tradition of using the patterns found in the nearby Mitla and Monte Alban ruins, and Demetrio’s personal family weaving history going back many generations. The wool is carded by hand in the next village and delivered in balls that become skeins and are then dyed in large vats with local herbs and plants, cochineal and indigo. Demetrio will discuss his process and history in person following the film and will have examples of his award-winning rugs and weavings to share with the audience.
