Giovanni Galli is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Urbino (Research Methods in Science and Technology program), and his supervisor is Prof. Mario Alai. Giovanni obtained a M.A. from the University of Bologna, where he worked with Prof. Eva Picardi and Prof. Giorgio Volpe on theories of truth and especially alethic pluralism, alternative positions to deflationism, and connections to the realist-antirealist debate. Now, his research interests are connected to scientific realism, scientific understanding, and the epistemology of big data. Abstract of the talk: Scientific understanding is a quite recent theme in the philosophical literature, but not surprisingly in the last years, many authors engaged a lively debate about what is to be conceived the scientific understanding and what are its main tenets. Many positions arise from this debate, but there is no consensus about what scientific understanding is. Moreover, in the last few years, we have witnessed the development of scientific practices which are becoming even more data-centric. Indeed big data technologies improve the effectiveness of different research activities, but according to many authors, they do not enable the scientific understanding of empirical phenomena. Furthermore, there is no account of scientific understanding focusing on data-centric sciences. In this talk the aim is twofold: I want to give an overview on the main positions concerning the scientific understanding, selecting the features of a compatible account with data-centric sciences and coherent with realist tenets; it will be also examined the methodology of data-centric sciences, in particular the one involved in big data analysis.
