My first impressions of Tawau weren’t exactly glowing—I even considered making a quick exit the next morning. But instead, I decided to dig deeper, do some research, and head out with a plan. And guess what? Tawau surprised me with its hidden gems! From the friendliest locals to fascinating sights, everything was within walking distance. Sure, the rainy season tried to dampen my spirits, but I wasn’t going to let a little weather stop me. I discovered the mosque with the biggest dome in Southeast Asia, explored the historic Bell Tower (the only monument in the city to survive WWII), and enjoyed some awesome street art and cozy coffee shops. Best part?
