It was such a pleasure chatting with Actor, LGBT Advocate and Director Denholm Spurr about his life, coming out, homelessness, Grindr, swimming, future goals and life in general. Despite his current success, he is very humble and continues to speak out against issues which affect the LGBT community, remembering back to a time when he found it hard to come out as a gay man. He shares his inspirational story of being homeless after difficulties with his parents accepting who he was. In his down to earth and candid way, he explains how he used he used meetings on Grindr and gay saunas as ways to earn a living, selling his body and finding places to sleep for the night rather than be on the street. With his good looks and speaking voice that so suits the Shakespearean roles he's played, it is hard to believe what Denholm has gone through. I totally admire his attitiude when he considers that he was 'one of the lucky ones' and acknowleges that there is a disproportionate number of gay men among the UK homeless right now because many parents still find it difficult to accept their children for who they truly are. This often leads to a downward spiral - leaving the home environment, finding a suitable place to live and often government policy fails so many and they slip into a world where there are few choices, just as happened with Denholm himself. As well as playing some incredible roles on stage and screen, he has also directed and is currently directing 'Happily Ever Poofter' which has had rave reviews and is up for two awards. His past credits include playing Joe in the gritty series 'The Grass is Always Grindr' which is an absolute MUST SEE in which there are many parallels with Denholm's own life. He also played Reg in a stage adaptation of 'Cathy Come Home' to mark the 50th anniversary of Ken Loach's powerful film, which played at The Barbican and was performed by Cardboard Citizens, a group who had all experienced the hardships of being homeless. There has also been many other performances which have received rave reviews, such as 'The HIV Monologues' and 'The Chem Sex Monologues'. Denholm is also a creator of showreels and a designer of board games - is there no end to the talents of 'this charming man'?
