Sam Lanin and His Orchestra – His 1921-1931 recordings with vocals by Scrappy Lambert, Jack Kaufman, Arthur Hall and Bing Crosby The Lanin name was magic during the Jazz Age. Sam Lanin led a major dance orchestra that began its engagement at the Roseland Ball Room in New York City in 1918. The Roseland Orchestra led by Lanin stayed there for many years throughout the 1920s. This orchestra made many recordings of dance and jazz age tunes under many different names for different record labels. This helped Lanin get around exclusive contracts that he had with specific record companies by recording for other labels under a pseudonym. During the mid to later 1920s many important musicians were taking up side work with his studio groups. It was common to find the Dorsey brothers, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden, Many Klein, Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti sitting in on these sessions. Many beginning vocalists cut their earliest records with his orchestra including Scrappy Lambert, Bing Crosby, Arthur Hall, Smith Ballew to name a few. In this assemblage of recordings are performances recorded between 1921 and 1931. The majority are sourced from 78rpm records from my own collection. The two performances with Bing Crosby on vocal are reissued recordings on CD but important enough to include here.
