Steam locomotives, while beautiful, powerful, and graceful, are generally old machines, and can be unpredictable at times. With a Lerro Productions photo charter scheduled on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad on October 21 and 22, 2013, a steam-filled two days was promised in the mountains of Maryland. However, the night before the charter, it was announced that 2-8-0 #734, the railroad's normal motive power, was mysteriously unavailable for the charter. Arriving at the station the next day, a suitable replacement engine was brought in and used, as sister engine, WM 2-8-0 #729 would be used to pinch-hit for 734.***** On the first day of the charter, #729 was used to pull the photo freight consist from Cumberland, MD along the line towards Frostburg, MD, stopping for multiple runbys along the way. A sunset stop was made at Helmstetter's Curve, and night sessions were held both along the line, and near the railroad's shops in Ridgeley, WV. On the second day, #729 was photographed in "pusher service", assisting the freight train from the rear, helping to push it up the steep hills to Frostburg - as well as running light, with only the caboose behind it. Enjoy this rare look at #729 steaming along on the Western Maryland! (**** #729 is actually Western Maryland #734 painted and re-numbered just for the photo charter, in case you were wondering)
