👉 www.khamai.bio/saving_mindo_toad.html Last year, we set out to save the habitat of the world’s only surviving population of the critically endangered Mindo Harlequin Toad, a species rediscovered after being thought extinct for 30 years. A few days ago, we finalized our most important land purchase yet, saving 28 hectares of this critical habitat. By expanding the reserve, we stopped the transformation of this forest into cattle pasture. This action effectively protected the only river in the world where this unique species survives and breeds. This new expansion also safeguards two unexplored creeks, where we anticipate finding additional toad survivors. How did this happen? Earlier this year, thanks to a grant from the Quick Response Fund for Nature, we made a down payment on the land, buying us time to slow the ongoing destruction and raise the remaining funds. We were given 137 days to finalize the purchase. Our campaign reached the Shahs—a family of dedicated conservationists—who instantly decided to bridge the funding gap. This action quintupled (5X) the protected area available for the toad, granting it a renewed chance at survival. Furthermore, we’ve begun the reforestation of nine damaged hectares. We call this "Catherine’s Forest," honoring the President of the Ceiba Foundation, the first institution to believe in and support this project. Today is a day to celebrate! Special thanks go to the 79 backers and 12 institutions who supported the creation of the Arlequín Reserve. The Mindo Harlequin Toad now has a home.
