That day, 300 people visited the grotto. In a state of extreme ecstasy, Bernadette repeatedly revisited the interior and exterior of the grotto openings. When she says, "Penance, Penance, Penance," Joseph Barinque hears her. Bernadette approaches the cave, observes the muddied water and red dirt, peers through the grotto opening, and starts to dig. Disgusted to drink it, she puts the moist mud on her lips, splits it out, and digs some more. After a third attempt, it was no longer muddy. Even yet, she found it difficult to try to sip it. At last, she collected the water from surrounding shrubs using the leaves. She used the dirty water to wash her face, leaving her face covered in reddish-brown sludge. Without excitement or shame, she responded to questions about her dirty face by saying, "The lady at the grotto told me to drink at the spring and wash in it." Bernadette exclaimed the fourth time I succeeded in throwing it away after I had failed three times. The grotto's patrons observed that afternoon that water was starting to seep out of the hole Bernadette had made. The water turned crystal clear. Individuals took bottles to provide the ill. It made those who drank it feel content and joyful. We are welcome to follow suit as well. "The lady said—just one drop suffices," Bernadette yells. Bernadette would ask the Lord to cleanse her heart in her prayers. "Father, you have given us your Son, the source of living water, through Mary, our Mother." "Help us respond to his call so that his presence may purify and heal us, and so that the abundance of his love may pour out on us."
