DEXA Scan & Bone Density | Bone Mineral Density | DEXA Body Scan (UK)

Today we shall discuss your DEXA Scan & Bone Density. Essentially, the DEXA body scan at Bodyscan (UK) tells you about your bone density, which means how brittle your bones are and how likely you are to break a bone if you, say, come off your bike or have a nasty fall. If you’re looking to change your body composition, you might not be that interested in bone density and you might think that conditions like osteoporosis only affect older people, particularly women. But believe me, problems with bone density do arise, even in younger clients and among men and I’ll show you that in a moment. Whilst a DEXA body scan is to establish your body composition (fat and muscle), it does also provide information about your bone density. Whilst DEXA bone density scan not a definitive, diagnosable result, it is a good indication of whether you have normal bone density. Your Bone Mineral Density (also known as BMD) is shown most simply on the blue graph. The first thing to notice is that the shape of the curve differs for men and women. You can see that for both sexes bone density rises and then falls with age, but the angle of rise and fall is much steeper for women than for men. This reflects the sharper fall in female bone density after menopause. Without any prejudice, it is better for your bone density to be higher rather than lower. This means your bones are more solid and less brittle and so less likely to break if you have a hard impact like a rugby tackle or a car accident. DEXA Bone Density Screening Recommendations 1. If you are interested in both your bone density and your body composition and you don’t know whether to book a body scan or a bone scan, my advice is to book a body scan first. That’s because a body scan will give you a good indication of your bone density, but a bone scan will tell you nothing at all about your body composition. However, if your primary interest is bone density and the diagnosis of osteopenia and osteoporosis, then you must locate a bone specialist. 2. Bone density moves slowly – down with age and up with resistance training or medication. Because it changes gradually and a body scan gives only an indication and not a precise result, you should not use body scans to definitively measure or track your bone density precisely. But a body scan will give a good indication and regular scans will show your bone density to be in a fairly narrow range. 3. The Bone Mineral Density scan result can be a surprise, and low or very low bone density does occur, even in younger people and even in men. If it is very low then we will advise you to follow up with your GP for specialized medical advice; and we’ll do the same if your result is off the charts at the high end, too. ⌛ - Timestamps 0:00 DEXA Scan & Bone Density 0:48 What is Bone Mineral Density (BMD)? 1:43 Bone Density is better higher than lower 1:57 Osteopenia & Osteoporosis 2:17 Resistance training & Bone Mineral Density (BMD) 2:59 Can the Bone Mineral Density (BMD) be too high? 3:30 DEXA bone density screening - Recommendations ✅ Get 10% off your DEXA scan with code YT10 ✅ visit https://www.bodyscanuk.com/ Bodyscan is the UK's only company dedicated to accurately measuring body composition with DEXA Body Scan.
