Worksop, Nottinghamshire. At a factory "near Sherwood Forest" we see the processes involved in making bows and arrows for archery: curved, laminated pieces of rosewood and maple are glued together then shaped on a sanding machine. The bow is then put on a machine to test the tension. Roy Matthews, British Champion Archer is seen holding his made-to-measure bow; he hands it back to one of the craftsmen to file a little more off the grip of the bow. Howard Wiseman, senior British coach and writer on archery stands watching. M/S of a girl running wax over the bowstring. The bow is polished by a man in an apron. Various shots show the arrows being made and fitted with flights made from turkey feathers. The feathers are shaped on a red hot wire, then a girl paints rings around the shafts while they rotate on a special machine. In a field by a river in the countryside we see Roy Matthews with Don Hand (the Notts County Champion) and Don's wife, Barbara. Several shots of them as they string their bows and take aim, then shoot their arrows at the targets in the fields. M/S of the three targets as arrows shoot into them. Note: there is no print for this issue. On file are notes on the story, with names of the workers seen (too numerous to mention here); correspondence and a small booklet about Marksman Archery Products, the company seen here. Cuts exist - see separate record. FILM ID:149.08 A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRITISH PATHÉ TV.
