A shave excision is a common, quick, and simple skin procedure used to remove a raised or abnormal spot (called a lesion) on the skin. In this case, we’re removing a lesion from the back. Step 1: Getting Ready First, the doctor examines the lesion carefully to decide if a shave excision is the right choice. The patient is asked to lie face down so the lesion on the back is easy to reach. The skin is then cleaned using an antiseptic solution, which helps kill germs and reduce the risk of infection. A sterile field is set up, meaning clean gloves and tools are used, and the area is kept as germ-free as possible. Step 2: Numbing the Area To make sure the patient doesn’t feel pain, a tiny needle is used to inject a small amount of local anaesthetic (numbing medicine) just under the skin around the lesion. This might sting for a few seconds, but it works quickly to stop any feeling in that area. Step 3: Shaving Off the Lesion Once the area is numb, the doctor uses a special tool—usually a scalpel (a small, sharp surgical blade)—to gently shave off the lesion. This is done very carefully, removing the lesion at the level of the skin or just slightly below it. The aim is to remove the visible bump while keeping the cut shallow so there’s minimal scarring. Step 4: Stopping the Bleeding A chemical called aluminium chloride or an electrocautery tool (which uses gentle heat) may be used to stop any small bleeding points. This is safe and usually painless. Step 5: Aftercare The area is cleaned again and covered with a small dressing or plaster. Stitches are not usually needed for a shave excision. The patient is given advice on how to look after the area at home—keeping it clean, dry, and covered for a few days. The removed lesion is often sent to a histopathology lab to be checked under a microscope, just to make sure it’s nothing serious. The skin usually heals within a week or two, leaving a flat mark or small scar. #drdermdiaries #dermatologist #skincare #lipoma #abscess #cyst #pimple #pimplepopper #skincancer #lipomaremoval #blackhead #cystpoping
