Students have a safer, more comfortable, and convenient route to and from school thanks to Minnesota Safe Routes to School. MnSRTS programs improve safety, reduce traffic, and improve air quality near schools. The program is funded in part by state tax dollars. According to the National Center for Safe Routes to School, only 17 percent of students walk to school today compared to 50 percent in the 1960s. "Safe Routes to School aims to change the habits of an entire generation by making it safer, easier, and more comfortable for students to walk and bike to school and in daily life," said Dave Cowan. Cowan is the Safe Routes to School Coordinator with MnDOT. Minnesota ranks #3 in the nation for its Safe Routes to School program. "This is due in part to the way that we fund our Safe Routes programs, both with federal dollars and with state dollars that have been attributed to us by the state legislature," said Cowan.
