This is a case of a young male who accidently ingested a chicken bone.He complained of severe pain and foreign body sensation in the throat. The foreign body as seen was removed by a cricopharyngoscopy using general anaesthesia. Care had to be taken not to injure the mucosal walls as the foreign body was sharp The first objective is to determine the nature of the sharp foreign body, time since ingestion, symptoms, and location by radiographs (x-ray a/p and lateral). Contrast studies are not of much help for sharp foreign bodies. In cases where location is difficult a CT scan is recommended to visualise the foreign body and identify early complications Foreign bodies in the cricopharyngeal region and oesophagus appear less dangerous than those in the respiratory passages. However, failure to treat them immediately can cause complications such as retro-pharyngeal or retro-oesophageal perforation, ulcerative oesophagitis, oesophago-respiratory fistula, recurrent pneumonitis, stricture formation and impaction.
