National Rail Museum - Part 1 - JOY TRAIN

The National Rail Museum in New Delhi is a museum which teaches you all about Indian Railways, from the past to the present, and also about the future. I have been wanting to visit this museum for many years, and finally I could do so in April 2019. I spent 4 hours at the museum and even that was not enough. I took many photos and videos, and will compile them into various parts and upload them, so that when you visit the museum, you can know what to expect. The museum is divided into two main sections. The outdoor section which has real exhibits which have been either preserved and restored. You can see all sorts of steam, diesel and electric locomotives as well as coaches. It includes narrow, meter and broad gauge exhibits. One major attraction is a working model of the Patiala State Monorail Trainway which is a steam powered monorail locomotive running with a supporting wheel. It has many other old steam engines. The diesel engines include WDM-1, WDM-2 and WDM-4, while some of the electric engines are the WCP-1, WCG-1 and WAG-1. There are many historic coaches as well as an EMU coach from an ancient Mumbai local train. The outdoor section also has a railway garden which has a few miniature trains running about in an enclosed area. In case you do not want to walk round the entire outdoor section, there are 2 trains that can take you around. One is called the Joy Train and is like a small narrow gauge train that takes you for a ride that lasts for little more than 5 minutes. It has two types of coaches, closed ones and open ones. When I went in it, it was morning time and the museum was still relatively empty, so I had an open coach almost all to myself. Later on the train became more crowded. The locomotive is battery operated but artificial steam comes out of the funnel. The second is the Toy Train which is built on a 1:8 scale to a real train. It is really tiny and you have to sit on the coaches like a bike. You cannot shake too much on this train as it wobbles a lot. The engine is designed to look like a real WDG-5 locomotive of Indian Railways. The ride on this train is a little less than 5 minutes. The second part to the museum is the Indoor Gallery where they have the entire history of the Indian Railways depicted through scripts, diagrams, photographs and models. They also have the working of various aspects of the railways like points, signalling, etc. It also has an exhibit called Miniature India on the top floor. On the ground floor of the Indoor Gallery, there are the simulators. There is a steam locomotive simulator, which was not functional on the day I went. There is also a diesel locomotive (WDG-5) simulator which was a great experience. And they have a coach simulator which is a virtual reality experience that takes you through the historic coaches to the ones we have today. The museum also has a restaurant on its premises which serves a limited number of dishes of various styles like North Indian, South Indian, etc. In this video you can see the coverage of the Joy Train. Enjoy seeing it from outside as well as a journey on it as I could comfortably record from both sides of the empty coach since it was the first round of the day. In the middle the train stopped for a few moments due to some minor issue but then soon started again. Hope you enjoy the Joy Train!
