About 125 miles north of San Francisco, you’ll find California’s Eel River Peninsula. It is one of the only places to find wild, free ranging tule elk. In 2021, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation completed a portion of a multi-phase project permanently protecting and opening public access to nearly 12,000 acres of tule elk range. Specifically, RMEF purchased 8,902 acres of an 11,902-acre tract between the Sanhedrin and Yuki Wilderness Areas and conveyed it to the adjacent Mendocino National Forest. The Trust for Public Land purchased the other 3,000 acres adjacent to RMEF’s project and conveyed it to the national forest as an addition to the Yuki Wilderness. The transaction builds on a strategy to protect up to 70,000 acres of northern California’s coastal wildlife habitat that, so far, protects more than 36,000 acres of that total with more in the works. It is a victory for tule elk, other wildlife, conservation, hunting and public access. Since 1984, RMEF and its partners opened or improved public access to more than 1.3 million acres of land.
