February 12th, 2026 Surrounded by love, Helen Marie (Carty) Stewart of Antigonish passed away after bravely fighting cancer. She was born November 27th, 1950 to Hazen and Mabel (Mills) Carty. Helen lived by her own rules and had many adventures in her younger years, much to the dismay of her parents. At the age of 15, she was fortunate enough to meet her soul mate, Kenny Stewart. They married and raised three children of their own along with several foster children. In addition to raising her children, she worked in many positions throughout the years. You may have seen her at Stewart's Autobody, Save Easy or, as she was better known for, catering. In the last few years she worked as a house keeper for the best boss ever… herself. She cleaned for many families who, along the way, became her friends. Helen and her siblings grew up very close and remained that way throughout the years, getting together as often as they could. Helen was very grateful to her second family, the Stewarts, who welcomed her and treated her as one of their own. Nan, as she is known as by grandchildren, will be remembered for her easy going nature, beautiful laugh and of course her tasty biscuits. She defended each of them fiercely to their parents and kept them well stocked with candy. Helen is survived by her loving husband of 57 and a half years, Kenny; children Tracey (Darryl) Lowe; Andrew; Melanie (Rob) Pauls; grandchildren Jade, Cassidy, Keegan (Eva), Dylan, Jensen, Logan (Anna), Kendra and Kyla; siblings Carol (Jim) Michaud; Gordon (Fay); Cyril; Liz (Charlie) Harpell; Margie (Roni) Goodacre; Susan (Rick) Rounding; Pat (Anita); Paula (Leo) MacIsaac; nieces, nephews and in-laws. She was predeceased by her mother Mabel, her father Hazen and brothers Howard, Gerald and Raymond. Helen’s family would like to thank Father Danny MacLennan, Dr Faour and the amazing nurses, the Palliative Care team especially Dr Rice and Valerie Petitpas. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Wednesday, February 11th in MacIsaac Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am on Thursday in St. Ninian Cathedral, Reverend Danny MacLennan presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit c/o St. Martha's Regional Hospital Foundation.
