Vertical Drop: 1,388 ft. Run Aspect: Southeast Run Type: Corniced Bowl DATE OF RECORDING: March 11, 2023 SNOW CONDITIONS: Tracked powder at the top, slightly crusty powder conditions down below DESCRIPTION: Genghis Khan is quite possibly one of, if not, my favorite Back Bowl runs at Vail. The run is located in the iconic China Bowl area which is one of the most diverse and interesting Back Bowls. It has wide groomers such as the Poppyfields runs, massive cliffs found in the Dragons Teeth area, and awesome cornice drops found in the Genghis Khan area. Genghis Khan is quite possibly the most notorious and legendary run in the Back Bowls (other than Forever) due to its cornice drop and steep pitch. You can access this run from either the Tea Cup Express or the Sun Up Express (I personally took the Tea Cup Express). You then head towards Tea Cup Bowl but hang skiers' left to stay on the skiers' right ridge of China Bowl. After traveling a little down the ridge, you'll come to the steepest and most corniced part of the bowl. This area is Genghis Khan. Although this run is known for it's massive Cornice drop-in, on the day of recording, it was a really small drop (barely a few feet). The snow underneath the Cornice was really nice and soft and the first few turns of the run were really nice and soft. Towards the middle and end of the run, the snow got a bit icier and crustier due to rising temperatures and the Back Bowls primarily facing South. I was actually okay with this as being a native California skier, I know how to ski mixed conditions a lot better than I know how to ski fresh or tracked powder. The snow was still in perfectly decent shape. One thing I really love about Genghis Khan is that it's one of the few runs at Vail to seriously maintain it's pitch all the way till it merges with the Poppyfields catwalk back to Orient and Tea Cup Express. Eventually, you take the Poppyfields run-out which was a little uneven and whack on the day of recording. You can either stop at the Orient Express (which'll give you access to the skiers' left side of China Bowl) or you can cross the bridge and take the Blue Sky Basin Catwalk (AKA the lower section of Cloud 9) all the way back down to Tea Cup Express and Skyline Express. Overall, I love Genghis Khan, it's definitely up there in my top 3 Back Bowl Runs that I've skied and I have such a blast every time I do it. I'm super pumped to have gotten a great re-recording of it during my most recent trip and look forward to doing it over and over with each future trip out to Vail!
