Sunday Homily in Odia by Most Rev. Fr. Dhirendra Kumar Nayak Assistant Parish Priest St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Paralakhemundi, Odisha On this 6th Sunday of Ordinary Time – Year A, the Word of God reminds us that we are given the freedom to choose between life and death, good and evil (Sirach 15:15–20). St. Paul teaches us about the wisdom of God revealed through the Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:6–10). In the Gospel (Matthew 5:17–37), Jesus calls us to deeper righteousness — not just external obedience, but purity of heart. Let us gather as one family in Christ to listen to the Word of God and deepen our commitment to holiness. 📖 Liturgy of the Word – Reflection 🕊 First Reading – Sirach 15:15–20 In the first reading, the Book of Sirach teaches about human freedom and responsibility. “If you choose, you can keep the commandments… Before man are life and death, good and evil; whichever he chooses shall be given him.” God created us with free will. He does not force obedience. Instead, He places before us two paths — life or death, good or evil. The message is clear: Our choices matter. Obedience to God’s commandments leads to life and blessing. Disobedience leads to spiritual destruction. This reading reminds us that holiness is not automatic; it requires daily decision and commitment. ✝ Second Reading – 1 Corinthians 2:6–10 St. Paul speaks about God’s hidden wisdom, a wisdom not understood by worldly thinking. “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard… what God has prepared for those who love Him.” The world often measures wisdom by intelligence, power, or success. But true wisdom comes from God and is revealed through the Holy Spirit. God’s plan of salvation through Christ may appear foolish to the world, but it is divine wisdom. This reading teaches us that to live righteously, we must allow the Holy Spirit to guide our minds and hearts. ✨ Gospel – Matthew 5:17–37 In today’s Gospel, Jesus continues the Sermon on the Mount and speaks about the fulfillment of the Law. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.” Jesus does not cancel the commandments. Instead, He brings them to perfection by revealing their deeper meaning. 🌟 Explanation of the Gospel Jesus teaches that righteousness must go beyond external obedience. 1️⃣ Anger and Reconciliation It is not enough to avoid murder. Even anger and hatred in the heart damage relationships. Jesus calls us to reconciliation and forgiveness. 2️⃣ Purity of Heart It is not enough to avoid adultery. Purity must begin in the mind and heart. Holiness starts internally. 3️⃣ Faithfulness in Marriage Jesus upholds the sacredness and permanence of marriage. 4️⃣ Truthfulness “Let your ‘Yes’ mean Yes and your ‘No’ mean No.” A disciple of Christ must live in honesty and integrity. 🔎 Central Message of Today’s Liturgy Today’s readings together teach us: • God gives us freedom — choose life. • God reveals divine wisdom — seek the Spirit. • Jesus calls us to deeper righteousness — change the heart. Christian life is not about minimum requirement. It is about transformation of the heart. True holiness is not just external religion but interior conversion. The Lord invites us today to examine our conscience: Are we living according to God’s deeper law of love? May this homily help us to: Choose life and holiness • Follow Christ sincerely • Live the commandments with love 🙏 May the Word of God transform our hearts.
