SOUNDBITE: (English) Peter Kreko, Political analyst from Political Capital: "Gordon Bajnai is a business man, he comes from the business elite, he is a non-partisan technocrat, and his main advantage as a politician is that he can get in good connection with the business elite and he understands well their interests. And in this situation, where very harsh economic measures are necessary to save the economy, I think it's important that the new prime minister is a man who understands the world of the business elite." 10. Bajnai replaces Ferenc Gyurcsany, who said last month he would resign and allow a new government to deal with Hungary's deepest economic crisis since the end of communism nearly 20 years ago. Bajnai needed the support of 193 lawmakers and received 204 votes in the 386-seat legislature, with most of the centre-right opposition either abstaining or not voting. Because of large external financing needs and a fluctuating currency, Hungary has been one of the countries in Eastern Europe hit hardest by the global economic crisis. Its economy is expected to shrink by around six percent this year and continue to erode, albeit at a smaller pace, in 2010. The Socialist minority government received support from the Alliance of Free Democrats, their former coalition partners, in getting Bajnai elected, but the Free Democrats will not be part of the new government. Speaking in parliament, the 41-year-old Bajnai said he would not seek to run for office when national elections are next held, most likely in April or May 2010. Bajnai, who was economic minister in Gyurcsany's Cabinet, said he accepted the Socialists' nomination to help solve Hungary's political crisis quickly and avoid early elections. Bajnai, however, said he would lead the government only as long as his "crisis management programme" was backed by a parliamentary majority and would not oppose early elections, as demanded by the opposition, if his political support faltered. Bajnai announced the expected members of his Cabinet on Tuesday, but did not provide details of his government programme. Bajnai said his programme contained not only cuts and restrictions but also steps to spur economic activity, which he promised to reveal later.
