A place filled with attractions and enchantments. The home of Lake Titicaca, where, according to legend, the children of the Sun, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, emerged from its waters to civilize the masses, worship the god Sun, and establish the mighty Inca Empire. That is Puno, full of mysticism and millenary history, where its people will charm you, its climate will strengthen you, and its attractions will captivate you. Because in Puno, everything is related to the history of ancient Peru, the Peru from which the first civilizations emerged and which still preserves its teachings and practices to this day. Just take a look at its native villages, where they still have ancestral customs that become one of the most powerful attractions for local and foreign tourists. History and culture in their entire splendor! Now, what are the attractions to visit in Puno? They are countless and endless. The main and essential one that attracts visitors from Peru and around the world is the Lake Titicaca. This enormous body of water is a Natural Heritage of Peru, which over its surface has floating islands (such as Uros, Taquile, and Amantani), history and ancestral culture. It is also the highest navigable lake on the planet, so you can visit the communities that inhabit these portions of land created from totora (a material also used to make their rafts and boats), where they coexist harmoniously with nature. Would you like to explore a bit of ancestral history, as well as appreciate the natural beauty of Puno? There are many archaeological complexes that will take your breath away, but you must visit the Cutimbo Archaeological Complex, the most important funerary center in southern Peru, and the Sillustani Archaeological Complex, also known as the Chulpas of Sillustani, an ancient cemetery associated with funerary rituals of the Inca, Colla, and Tiahuanaco cultures. If you visit Puno, it is almost mandatory to try its delicious gastronomy. In the port of Lake Titicaca, you will be offered a delicious fried trout, which you can accompany with rice, french fries, or boiled potatoes. In the cities you visit, dare to taste a delicious Caldo de cabeza (head broth), Sancochado (traditional stew), Chairo (hearty soup), or a nourishing Chupe de Quinua (quinoa soup). Special mention deserves the Kankacho, a delicious roasted lamb dish that you will love. Getting to Puno is not complicated. There are two routes to reach the city center. The first alternative is by air (from Lima, the capital of Peru, the flight takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes), you land in the city of Juliaca and then transfer by bus to the city of Puno. The journey by four wheels takes no more than an hour. The other alternative is more for adventurous travelers: a 21-hour journey by road, passing through the regions of Lima, Ica, and Arequipa before reaching Puno.
